What to write on a headstone inscription
An inscription can say anything you want it to. At a minimum, they usually include the person’s full name, their date of birth and their date of death.
The main elements of an inscription are:
- Opening phrase e.g., In loving memory
- Name of your loved one (full name or nickname if appropriate, maiden name if appropriate)
- Date of birth and death
- Relationship with your loved one (sometimes the names of immediate family and their relationship with the loved one are included).
- Closing phrase e.g., Rest Peacefully
Many families also choose to include quotes from scripture or poetry, or a short description of the loved one.
Advice on writing an inscription
- "Less is more" - we recommend short and concise.
- Enduring - inscriptions should be timeless and not overly sentimental
- Take inspiration from literature, lyrics, and poems
- Make it uplifting. If the memorial celebrates life, it will bring peace and comfort to all who visit the grave.
